Goodreads asked Benjamin H. Barnette:

Where did you get the idea for your most recent book?

Benjamin H. Barnette The idea for "Winds Across Beringia," came in 1983 as I supervised an archeological field camp in Southwest Alaska on the coast of the Bering Sea, so in that sense on Beringia. Myself and the other archeologist as well considered that we may be camped where the first Asian people walked from Beringia into Alaska and thus North America. What would their "mammoth hunting" life had been like on the landmass of Beringia now covered by the Bering Sea.
