There definitely is transphobia from other characters towards Ry, and I think Ry has a more fluid relationship with his body and gender and sex than other trans people might (this is my opinion based on other books I've read with trans characters, so I could be wrong about this). At one point in the book Ry says something about not speaking for all trans people and I think readers should take that to heart.(less)
