A Goodreads user asked Stuart Gibbs:

Why did Erica not want to try and save Paul Lee in Spy School Goes South? Doesn't that go against her morals because she was just about to let him die? He may be a criminal but I still don't think he deserved the harsh treatment he would have gotten if Ben hadn't intervened.

Stuart Gibbs The truth is, sometimes, spies have to make judgment calls. If SPYDER was plotting something that could endanger the lives of millions of people, but saving one criminal would ruin the CIA's plans to stop that, then Erica feels losing one life (of a bad person) justifies saving all the other people. Erica has also been taught that sometimes, she might have to sacrifice a friend to protect the mission (although she doesn't do that).
