Melly asked Matt Youngmark:

Hi Matt, how come in BLADE RUNNER, we have technology sufficiently advanced to make replicants almost totally indistinguishable from human beings, but somehow we don't have tracking devices so we can find them if they go missing?

Matt Youngmark Because tracking technology and robotics develop in a direct, negative correlation to each other. The two fields rely on the same pool of potential scientists, so any significant advances in one will almost always come at the expense of advances in the other (see graph: http://hsc.csu.edu.au/agriculture/ele... )

The same principle explains why Battlestar Galactica's Cylons can flawlessly replicate every part of human anatomy except boobs.
