I thought Giver of Stars was very good, but I am confused about the ending. Did Verna make up the story to save Margery? Could someone spell it out for me.

The girls are glad that their rapist father is dead esp. since they figure he also killed their mom. Marjory, if she did it accidently 'saved' the sisters from more grief. So in gratitude, and because they knew she wasn't getting any kind of a fair trial, they help concoct a story that keeps Marjory completely innocent of wrong doing. Self defence would have been an OK verdict if the girl had been Peggy, or Izzy. Someone with loving parents, esp. if those parents had the money for a lawyer and to give to the police to keep the public opinion silent. Bennett's dad 'paid off' the police to ensure that Marjory was convicted not only legally but in public opinion in the town.- (Remember all the cigars the police chief was now using).(less)
