There is a young adult's version, which dampens some of the more graphic effects of famine, and I would recommend that for middle schoolers (it depends on the child - I have students for whom none of this book would be shocking). For high school or older, this is a bit more authentic.

I would recommend this book for young adults to adults as there is some content that could be potentially upsetting to younger kids. However, it’s an incredible story that I believe children should know, too, and I think there is a younger and shorter edition that eliminates the more adult content which could be utilized for this purpose.
