Do you need to read the first one to understand this one?

Mike They make small references to what you need to know, so you can skip and read after.
John Probably not but it is one of Crichton's best works so I would highly recommend it either way. The plot summary above pretty much tells you the whole story of the first book.
Maria Rose Like Mike, the other commenter stated you can read this book by itself since it does reference the original story--The Andromedia Strain-- which was written in 1969 by Michael Crichton. If you haven't read any Michael Crichton's books, then start there after reading this book. This book is a followup to those events written by this author using notes from Micheal Crichton. There was also a movie made using the book as a source along with other books Michael Crichton.
