This book would be appropriate for a class of 16-18 year olds. A non native speaker in high school would probably be able to find the meaning behind the book, possibly with some difficulty. I'm a native English speaker and I read this when I was 13 years old, but I would always be reading way ahead of my age group. It really just depends on the maturity of the reader. If the person can handle reading very graphic descriptions of brutal beatings, killings, rape, sexual assault and many other depressing events then it would probably be okay, but if the person can not handle it than they should give it a wide berth. This is one of my favorite books I've ever read though the events that take place in the book are appalling and horrible, it still conveyed such a powerful, heart wrenching, beautiful message
