Goodreads asked Ted Anthony Roberts:

Where did you get the idea for your most recent book?

Ted Anthony Roberts My most recent book is "Captain Skull: From the Memoirs of Sir Charles of Riley," and I had actually wrote the first draft of the novel back in the late 1980's, which turned out to be about only 70 pages of hand written text. I have only, within the past few years, picked the story back up, and added a lot of details to the plot.... What initially inspired the story was Daniel Defoe's 'Robinson Crusoe,' but more so was Rafael Sabatini's 'Captain Blood.' As for Defoe, I loved his narrative style, and I loved the swashbuckling action and time setting of Sabatini.
