Theodosia of the Fathomless Hall
Theodosia of the Fathomless Hall asked Colleen Oakes:

When did you first read Alice in Wonderland and when did you formulate the idea for Queen of Hearts? Technically, two questions, but I'm curious. Thanks for writing, ma'am!

Colleen Oakes I first read Alice in Wonderland as a child, and to be honest, I found it very confusing. I read the novel and it's sequel, Through the Looking Glass, through two times before writing Queen of Hearts. I had an entirely different experience reading it as an adult. It's so whimsical and yet so political at the same time, something that the movies don't really touch upon.

As for the idea for Queen of Hearts, it honestly just came to me one night as I was driving in the rain. I was thinking about Alice in Wonderland and I thought, "Why is the Queen so angry all the time?" By the time I got to my location (California Pizza Kitchen, so exotic), I had an idea of what the book would be like and by the end of dinner, I had outlined the plot on a napkin.
