Hey, good question. Pig iron is “crude iron as first obtained from a smelting furnace, in the form of oblong blocks.” It is usually used to create a strong, flexible form of steel, often through a process known as the Bessemer Process. It was named because the blocks of iron laying against the smelting trough looked like baby pigs suckling against a mama pig.
