Ian, I love the Rebus books and noticed in a few interviews that you cited Ernest Tidyman's Shaft novels as an influence. I, like you read them in my teens when they were first published in the UK by Corgi in the 1970s, and they have stayed with me ever since - so much so I wrote a book about them. Where there any specific aspects of Tidyman's writing that you admired and carried across into your own work?

I just finishef "A Legacy of Spies" by John Le Carrė. The plot uses an old case as a device to bring us into the past and at the same time explain how current events were shaped by the aftermath of this old operation gone pear-shaped. Could you see doing something similar with Rebus and Big Ger?

Good day Mr. Rankin - I have just finished The Hanging Garden (excellent novel) and I noticed that DI Rebus seems to have "upped" his sarcasm and witty comebacks in this novel. Quite humourous and I am sure readers will agree, it just seems that he is overtly cutting and outspoken. Was this consciously added to his character or did it just organically arise when writing? Keep doing what you're doing!
