It has some pretty heavy subject matter, so it might depend on the 13 year old, your family rules, what you are interested in and if you have an adult to talk about the book with after you've read it. I've told most younger teens to wait as they would probably like it more when they are older. Dial recommends 14+, School Library Journal recommended High School Sophomores and up.
