Hello, u know other crime fiction/non-fiction less noir and more nuanced than Maltese Falcon? About Falcon i liked: much dialogue, told chronologically with homogenous POV, relat. realistic + easy to follow. But i disliked the cartoon-like opposites of hard-boiled guy / effiminate guy / sweet helpless "girl". Aware of Chandler + Highsmith – and who else? I read English + German, dislike gore + violence. Thanks!

You should check out Don Herron’s site donherron.com . He is very much into the mean streets—fiction and non-fiction and he’s a leader and champion of San Francisco’s Maltese Falcon Society. Nice guy too.

I think this is quintessential Noir Detective Fiction. This is not to say there are not others. I would look into Vintage Crime/Black Lizard publisher and what authors they own the rights to. You are bound to find something you like there.

Try any of the Leonid McGill stories from Walter Mosley, they should be interesting to you. He is more cerebral and flawed. The first one in the series is "The Long Fall".
