David Wong Horror never gets better when it's explained, particularly in stories like this where the source of the dread (and lots of the comedy) is that the characters find themselves in a position of tremendous responsibility but with no clear picture of what's going on, or if what they're doing is even the right thing. They are at the mercy of forces they don't understand and couldn't understand even if it was explained, so what's important in the story is in how they approach that situation, and specifically how the three main characters have three very different approaches to the unknown, to coping with that uncertainty. But even the resident expert who doles out exposition Dr. Marconi, freely admits he often doesn't know what's happening or why. So what gets uncovered with each new book is not additional details about the history or lore, but rather allowing the characters to learn and mature and come to terms with their place in a world that they'll never completely understand. I feel like that applies to real life, too. You'll never solve the universe, you'll only (hopefully) solve your own ability to deal with what it throws at you.
