Don't skip the first two; not that any of them could not stand alone, but it is a much more satisfying reading experience to "mature" with Rabbit -- especially in regard to his relationships with his wife and son. I actually read them a year apart to create at least some distance before revisiting the character (each novel was written and set about ten years after the last). I tend to do this with most 3-4 novel series I read if there is an appreciable break in the timelines. I rarely binge read unless it's poetry or a pop/genre fiction series without large temporal gaps.
