First of all, Rosalind did NOT break up with Jacob. Gemma wrote a letter and signed it in Rosalind's name. So Gemma thought that was why Jacob committed suicide. But it wasn't the reason; he never read the letter. His depression overcame him. It wasn't clear to me if his mother ever read the letter.
The character of Rosalind Ryan was not fully explained. Every one said how beautiful she was, but she had no friends. Was she a seductress or a pathetic girl? Why did she want to go back to Smithson? And what was the meaning of her rewrite of "Romeo & Juliet?"
