Be Charmed by These Bewitching Books from 2025

"The Bookwoman of Troublesome Creek" is about Cussy Mary Carter who was the last BLUE WOMAN of Kentucky and was one of the Pack Horse Women. Moyes's book will get more publicity and may even be better written but I'd hate for the first one to be overlooked because the info on the "Blue" people was as interesting as the Pack Horse story. Is Mary's story included in this book? If not, then it should be read also.

I do think "The Bookwoman of Troublesome Creek" is more realistic in its portrayal of the culture of the mountain people of Kentucky and that Kim Michelle Richardson does a better job of conveying the beauty and harshness of life in the mountains. I recommend reading both for a more complete understanding of the time, the people, the prejudices, and the importance of the work of the Packhorse Librarians. (less)
