What's with the stilted language in the beginning of the book?

Mari I've had several people mention this. The story starts when Jahohora is about 4 years old. Since it's written in a first-person, present-tense, stream-of-consciousness style, the early part is told in the language of a 4-year-old. The language matures along with Jahohora. Thus, the language is a reflection of Jahohora's age -- not her ethnicity.
