It is the second of a planned trilogy, the first being The Thousand Autumns of Jacob de Zoet, so it makes sense to read those two in relatively quick succession.

As for the others, part of the fun of Mitchell is spotting the links between novels, but I don't think it matters too much what order you read them in, though publication order is no bad thing.

Of the others, Black Swan Green has the fewer significant overlaps compared with his other works. So far. That may change. (less)
