Two things - first, having the time to write. A writer's greatest luxury is time - unstructured time to let the mind wander and the words and sentences and paragraphs come together. Be selfish about your writing time; guard it jealously. It is pure gold. Second, having a serious reader (who is not just blowing smoke) say, "Gee, I really liked your book."
