Grant asked Garon Whited:

While he doesn't have much practice at it I was just wondering, is Erick actually bad at necromancy? I just finished reading dragon hunters and Erick just whipped up four soulstones on the spot that a highly trained wizard with years of study on the subject says are so advanced they break the laws of magic. Is it just another case of his skewed self image of himself?

Garon Whited Partly. Any wizard encountering Eric is going to agree he's an expert on certain things--Mary made note of it in regard to gates, for example. When he says he's "bad at necromancy," he means *he* doesn't feel he's good at it. He's like a very strong man who says he isn't a weightlifter. True, he can haul big weights, but he's not a professional. As far as most people are concerned, they're convinced he's a weightlifter.
As for Y'vin's observations, remember how everyone treats necromancy on the shard-worlds. It's naughty. He understands what *he* thinks are the basics, but they're *very* basic. Eric is using Einsteinian math while Y'vin is still using Newtonian.
