Do you ever get anxious before reading or writing, if so how do you push past it?
David Wong
I get anxious doing anything BUT writing. I get anxious about going to the grocery store, I get anxious walking my dog, or talking to friends, or watching a movie, worried that I'll do it wrong, or that it's taking too much time away from work I should be doing. Not writing, though - that's the only thing I'm confident about, where I feel like I'm completely in control. I can't control if people will buy it, or if the editor will like it, but I am confident that the piece of writing I produced was exactly what I intended, and will be the best I could have done.
I don't think I know anyone else who has just one thing like that, but it really is just the one. I can't sing or play an instrument or play any sports, I'm not fit or handsome or good at math. I get nervous about social interactions because I have a real, verified track record of screwing them up. But I don't get nervous about writing, that's the thing I do to escape all that.

You have written three of my all time favorite books, and I think a huge part of why I love them so much is the characters, both main and secondary. Even just the characters who tend to wander in for a chapter seem fleshed out and funny. I was wondering how much backstory you personally imagine for your characters that doesn't make it into the book? Do you know their whole lives as you write them?

Just curious... how long was it from the time you came up with the idea for WTHDIJR until the book was actually released? Some authors like Stephen King pump them out pretty quickly while others like George R. R. Martin take considerably longer (both are brilliant... I'm not cutting anyone down with that comment :)) The book is brilliant, by the way!
