Christina he's a completely brilliant conman. he and Caleb faked the whole boat thing-- all to prepare Rachel into becoming more bold and less afraid of everything. he knew Rachel was on to him and he had to get her angry enough to look past all her hermit ways so she could inevitably do all that she ended up doing in the real world.

that's my take on it at least.
