Susan I'd recommend reading a few of the earlier books first, as I think readers who start with this one will spend most of the book wondering when something will happen. Readers familiar with the series will have more patience and enjoy spending time with familiar characters and the Venice setting.
Rafa Sánchez I think it is not necessary to read the 27 books before this, but a few of them is advisable... otherwise you will get not a fair idea of Brunetti's world. Start with the first one (Death at La Fenice) and then try a few of the rest, if you don't want to read all.
Joe Moss Although progression is slow there has been movement through the series, for example some characters have passed on. I would strongly recommend reading them in sequence.
Hilary M Not essential to read them in sequence, but if you start at the beginning you get to know the characters as they are introduced.
