I didn't really think about this while listening to the book initially, but now thinking back....did Matthew leave Mei to die in the fire, to rescue baby Grace? Whaaat!? I initially thought he roused Mei but she fell back asleep, but now I'm thinking she was just narrating what happened (as she did when she first fell asleep) that she saw him during her sleep and he chose to help the baby instead of her??

I do think that Matthew left her in the library (as Rebecca previously commented), because in his view of ethics it would be most important to save the youngest life (not the life of Mei, despite the fact that they had an attachment). (less)
