I didn't really think about this while listening to the book initially, but now thinking back....did Matthew leave Mei to die in the fire, to rescue baby Grace? Whaaat!? I initially thought he roused Mei but she fell back asleep, but now I'm thinking she was just narrating what happened (as she did when she first fell asleep) that she saw him during her sleep and he chose to help the baby instead of her??

The baby obviously would have never been able to leave herself. I think the fact that he went over to Mei at all demonstrates that he was at least trying to save two lives rather than one. Still, it was so sad that Mei in her dying moments trusted that he would save her.(less)
