In my family, we often pronounce it "noun." I think Laymon defines it pretty well in the chapter where he and his mama notice her returned check at the grocery. It means "not one" or "not any" or "none."

"Nan" is the equivalent of saying none, nothing, or nobody depending on how it is used.
