Goodreads asked Loretta Quesinberry Pickens:

Where did you get the idea for your most recent book?

Loretta Quesinberry Pickens I got the inspiration for my book The Last Drumbeat from a long lost poem written by my great-grandfather who was a drummer in the Civil War. That poem was written with such sensitivity and love I had to learn more about him. In the process I learned about my ancestors - my great-grandmother and great-grandfather. A simple farming family from the southwestern area in Virginia, who were thrown into a war they never really understood.
