I think it is that she has to put herself before someone else to protect herself emotionally.... Be it her parents, her sister, Patrick and even Will.... The theme runs through the entire book - every time she steps away from someone. She is always conflicted in those decisions, and she doesn't do it very well at all, but it is honestly what we all have to do to protect ourselves sometimes. (less)
