Hi Julia, How do you improve your writing, particularly your grammar? I find myself at times making the occasional grammar error. How do you improve your storytelling?
Julia Phillips
Hi Michael, thanks for your question! Everyone makes the occasional grammar error, so you're not alone there :) I would recommend 1) reading grammar and usage guides to keep up with evolving rules (e.g., THE ELEMENTS OF STYLE, DREYER'S ENGLISH), 2) reading your work out loud after you write it to catch typos, awkwardness, etc., and 3) sharing your work with other people to get their editorial feedback. Improving our writing is a lifelong endeavor. Wishing you lots of luck as you continue!

Dear Julia, thank you so much for your book. The setting is so appealing, it made me want to explore distant corners of my own country. I spent some time reading on Kamchatka's history, finding pictures, watching youtube videos of how the streets of Petropavlovsk, Palana and Esso look like. I don't have a question so I just put a question mark as it's a requirement to post a question. :) ?

I just learned about your book from an email from your publisher. They categorize "Disappearing Earth" as 'women's literature.' Based on the description, your book doesn't fit that category. Are you comfortable with that designation? I don't usually read 'women's lit,' but your book sounds really interesting. Thanks. Nikki

How did you convey the RFE’s alienation and otherworldliness? (I’ve been to Kamchatka twice, as well as Primorye.) The book does a powerful job exploring conflicts: police and civilians, ethnic Russians and native populations, educated people and commoners. Amid the mystery and overlapping plots is deep exploration of the struggle of eking out a marginal life in the distant outskirts of post-Soviet Russia.
