Just recently saw this movie. What was meant by the QT (Randy Quaid says, "but the herder, he's gonna pitch a pup tent on the QT"?

QT means "done secretly or privately" It is short for the word "quiet".

There are two tents. The herder is supposed to go out and sleep in the flock of sheep in a smaller tent (pup tent) to watch out for predators. Pup tents are closer to the ground and less obtrusive that full tents, which is why they were used for the sheep sleeping.

On the QT simply means on the quiet. So no one knows.
