Firefly
Firefly asked Jennifer Donnelly:

I just read the Waterfire Saga and I absolutely LOVED it! The diversity, the plot, the world... Everything was so interesting! I was wondering though, why do the mer people have items that only seem to make sense on land, like draperies or mops and buckets? I think there's even mention of warm food at one point, even though they live in the water.

Jennifer Donnelly Magic! Merfolk do all kinds of things underwater that we terragoggs can't quite fathom: breathing, singing, sipping tea, casting spells, talking to fish and animals, etc. But the warm food is easy for us to grasp: they use stoves just like us -- only difference is that theirs are fueled by molten lava!
