George Garrigues asked Edward G. Lengel:

I'm doing a book about WW1, and I've noticed several mentions that Kansas and Missouri National Guard (or militia) officers were elected by the troops (including in your book). I've found nothing to back that up & wonder: Can enlighten me as to the source of that info?. I do notice there was a MO constitutional amendment in 1924 to institute such a system but I have no info on whether it was successful or not.

Edward G. Lengel Good question. I have seen this anecdotally in a number of cases but have not done the primary source research to see if the anecdotes are verifiable. I also can’t recall off hand if Robert Ferrell gave credence to this in his excellent book on the 35th Division. It may be that the “elections” were informal in some way, but to be honest it does seem odd that this would have been taking place in 1917.
