I’m just finishing on the spooks destiny. As I realised, the Spook mentions near the start that they were from the “County” to an Irishman. It’s a pointless question really, but it made me wonder. How does he know that he means Lancashire? I think this happens a few other times throughout the series. Is the name of any real county or English place ever mentioned?

Yes, throughout the series some towns are named from Lancashire (the true name of the County). I change a few - for example Preston is changed to 'Priestown' but others (such as Ormskirk are retained in their original form).
Within the fiction an Irishman would know that they were referring to Lancashire. But I always use the County.
