What made you decide to have Matilda have that talk with Spike toward the end of Protectors instead of carrying the distance between them over to the 2nd book?

Michael Robertson Thanks for your question. Often, I go with what feels right at the time. I remember thinking Spike and Matilda had enough ahead of them with the restrictions placed upon them by the society they live in. I suppose it felt more tragic to show how their future depended on forces outside of their control. I also wanted to show Matilda's motivations for her actions and it seemed to fit with the resolution of the theme of overcoming fear.
