MaryJeanne asked Alan Bradley:

After I finish one of your books I have a feeling very like a parent whose child has moved away -- and "empty nest" feeling. I love Flavia so dearly... she is tough, funny, compassionate and vulnerable. If I feel that close to her as a reader, I wonder how you must feel as her author... her father, so to speak. When you finish writing a novel do you feel that empty nest feeling?

Alan Bradley Yes, there's always a bit of a postnatal "blueness" after finishing a book: a feeling of deprivation, which only vanishes when a new one is begun.

That's what keeps me going!

Thanks, MaryJeanne, for such an interesting question.
