Does anyone know what the rock on the cover represents? I don't remember a rock in the book, but then again it was so long I forgot some parts of it.

Teresa Considering the title of the book, my guess would be that it's a reference to the expression "dumb as a rock".
Gabrielle LilliAnn Fool’s gold? What looks so shiny and amazing (Harvard, Ivan, travel) is actually just a rock. Her many experiences of disillusionment in the story.
Noam I have been wondering that too! I wonder if it has to do with the part where she's walking with one of her host families and their dog, and these boys start throwing rocks toward them, and they throw rocks back at the boys. The theme of how people treat dogs comes up a lot, so maybe it's an indirect allusion to that?
