Goodreads asked Melody Curtiss:

What’s the best thing about being a writer?

Melody Curtiss There are many wonderful things about writing, but the best thing about BEING a writer isn't what ends up on the page.

It's what happens inside the head. Writers see things differently than other people. Nearly every moment of experience is viewed with two minds, one linked to ideas, analysis, synthesis and emotions we are storing away for future use. When writers digest newspaper articles, books and listen to conversations, there is another conversation that goes on inside our minds. Our nighttime brain activity is as valued as our daytime activity, and not just for the grand madness of dreams. The subconscious sorts daily experiences and tags and files them away for future use - this is the stuff that informs our writing. It took me a long time to realize that other people don't see the linkages and connections I see, they don't hear the poetry in a random turn of phrase, they don't feel colors, see music or hear the sunset. Writing is a translation of a unique view of the world, so that others may experience what we do.
