As a child, I loved wildly fantastical stories like "Charlie and the Chocolate Factory," "The Phantom Tollbooth," and anything by Edward Eager. But the books that inspired the more serious side of my writing were Howard Pyle's King Arthur and Robin Hood books, stories about loyalty and love, sacrifice and honor.
