How do you come up with your characters, and are any based on real people?

My characters usually tell me who they are once I put them into situations, if that makes sense. I have a general idea of their personality--willful, snarky, timid, damaged--and that firms up as I write the book. I'm sure my own personality is always injected into them in some way, and once in a while I'll give a side character some of the characteristics of someone I know. I always mentally "cast" my books with actors, but that's for appearance only.
