I thought Atlas held up the sky not the world. It's been a while but I remember even in Rick Riordan's version Annabeth and Artemis were forced to take his place in book 3 or 4 of the original series ?

Sara Is You're right. Didn't read this book, but read all of Rick Riordan's. But I know that he held up the sky.
