Don't be afraid to self publish your book. But... a few caveats:
1. Make sure it's really really good.
2. Make sure you are a whiz at marketing and sales, because THAT is what's going to sell the book.
3. Make sure you set up a good website and collect email addresses.
4. Make sure you promote your website in your books!
I have self-published many books, and contrary to being 'looked down upon', I've used those books to get interviews on CNBC, ABC News, CNN, and the list goes on.
Bottom line, it's the not the publisher that matters: it's the promoter!
