I like to listen to music when I read and while reading the Winternight trilogy I was listening to a lot of Lana Del Ray (esp. Dark Paradise) and I just love how much it fits Vasya and Morozko's relationship. Do you listen to music when you brainstorm ideas or when you write?

Katherine Arden sometimes! Mostly classical, since lyrics are distracting. I listened to a lot of Russian composers while I was writing the Winternight books. Rimsky-Korsakov, Modest Mussogorsky (of Night on Bald Mountain fame) Igor Stravinsky (Rite of Spring!), Sergei Rachmaninoff were all favorites. And Tchaikovsky, obvs.

I also, (to just totally change gears), would listen to a lot of Elephant Revival, just my hands down favorite group, to chill out in between writing sessions.

I just finished the audiobook for The Bear and the Nightingale. Really loved it. Truly a story I could fall into and get lost in. How did you become interested in Russian folklore? So looking forward to the next book.
