Bridget asked Kendare Blake:

Hi Kendare! I am currently writing a fantasy novel (hopefully series in the future), and I was wondering if I could get some advice? What do I write when there are no significant things going on like a battle or love scene? I'm not really sure what to write in those moments where there is nothing important happening, so if you could maybe lend some advice, I would really appreciate it! Thanks so much!

Kendare Blake It could be said that everything is important. Explosions and love scenes are nice and all but they don’t mean anything without the stuff surrounding and leading up to them. The tension must be built. The context given. Relationships developed. That’s what you’re doing during the quieter scenes. Those scenes will still have plenty going on, and lots of stakes. Think about the impact just one meaningful look between characters can have. It can seed doubt, signal a growing connection. Imply a threat. Every scene should feel important, should provide the reader with deeper context or new information. Even if there’s nothing “happening”, something is always happening.
