Nothing 'actually' happened … but there was clearly an underlying emotional tension between Griet and Vermeer, which stayed with Griet long after she left his household and married. Whether Vermeer felt the same for Griet - or whether he was only interested in her for the art she inspired - is not clear. The book is written from Griet's perspective so the workings of Vermeer's mind can only be guessed at.
