Discussion questions for my book club?

Sara I know this is a bit late, however here are some book club questions:
1) What was the point the book tried to prove? Love overcomes it all?
2) Is it truly a Christian novel? If it is, shouldn’t the faith issue have weighted more for Jakób and Gretl?
3) What’s a favorite translated book of yours?
4) Did you know there were orphans from Europe sent to South Africa during World War II?
5) There is a continual search to belong but who wants a small Jewish girl?
6) At the beginning, the dilemma of a little girl changing her identity and relying on complete strangers boggled me. Gretl, the main heroine of the story, was able to do all of this, and still have a positive and resilient attitude for what lay ahead. How could someone do that, let alone do it more than once?
7) Would you go back to this story ever again?
8) Would you have liked more back story to Bernard’s forebears? We know he was an Afrikaner but what Protestant denomination? Was it Lutheran? Did the root of his abhorrence of Roman Catholicism harken back to the Protestant Reformation?
9) There was a discussion between Gretl & Francois where they both agreed that their fathers would be opposed to each other based on some political or ideological positions. What was that about?
10) What are your thoughts on the topic of the racial strife and apartheid or lack of mention in the book?
11) Was it a fairy tale ending?
