Subhadeep Dutta asked Andrew Rowe:

Hi Andrew , Want to know something ? In terms of pure fencing prowess how would you rate corin currently ? for example if there was a sword fight without any use of mana , would he prevail against one of the heavy hitters ?

Andrew Rowe If we assume no one uses any magic (or passive enhancements from magic, like shrouds) and we rely purely on skill, Corin would rate in top 100 (out of several thousand) university students. In a structured fencing tournament, he'd likely rate in the top 10. He'd also beat a lot of the teachers in pure sword fighting ability.

He's extremely good for his age, but lacking in practical experience compared to most of the older characters. It's much harder to compare him to characters like Derek and Keras, because they've been physiologically altered by their use of magic over time, and removing that would alter their fighting styles significantly.

If we reduce people like Derek and Keras to having physical levels equivalent to non-attuned humans with similar levels of exercise, Corin would stand a chance, but it would be a very low chance because they have a great deal more practical experience. Both of them have fought in a number of tournaments, as well as an even greater number of life or death situations. They'll be better at reading their opponents, have better muscle memory, etc.

I'd give Corin a 2/10 chance of beating someone like Teft in a no magic situation with all physical attributes equalized.

He'd have more like a 1/10 chance against Derek, and a less than 1/10 chance against Keras.

His odds against his peers are much higher. I'd give him 8/10 against Sera or Patrick without magic, and probably 6.5/10 against Marissa in the context of a sword tournament. She has comparable physical skill to his, but he's more familiar with swords. She'd have a huge advantage unarmed.

This reflects his state at the end of On the Shoulders of Titans. As Corin trains throughout the series, you can expect this answer to change.
