It very much depends on the child. I remember reading Felix Salten's "Bambi" when I was 7, which is of course full of death and brutality, but man I loved that book. Read it over and over again. Really made me see things from an animal's point of view. So I probably would have dug this book as a 10 or 11 year old. But read a little bit yourself first and see because at this point much of the language is a old fashioned and stiff sounding. You'll probably have to do a little aside explaining too, about what an travel was like in that time period. No google maps, no iPhones. . .
