I think you’d lose a lot by not reading Norwegian by Night first

I agree. While it is not necessary to read Norwegian By Night first, it introduces a lead character on her own turf. It isn’t quite as good a story but still well worth reading... fours stars compared to five!

You do not need to read Norwegian By Night first however reading American By Day first would reveal spoilers about it. NbN was very good. I may prefer it to this one.

Yes! In my opinion there are things you just won't really understand unless you've read Norwegian by Night first.
